Amnesty International calls on Iran to release Belgian aid worker and ensure his safety

Amnesty International, the human rights organization, has announced that the authorities of the Islamic Republic of Iran have subjected Belgian aid worker Olivier Van de Casteele to enforced disappearance, torture, and other mistreatment.

The report further states that Van de Casteele is being held in a solitary cell underground, without windows, deprived of adequate healthcare and fresh air.

This Belgian aid worker has been sentenced by the Revolutionary Court to 40 years in prison and 74 lashes.

Amnesty International adds that there are indications of the Iranian authorities holding this Belgian citizen hostage with the aim of pressuring the Belgian authorities to exchange him for an Iranian security official imprisoned in Belgium.
