Mohammed bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the Emir of the UAE, will make an important and decisive visit to Qatar on Monday at the invitation of Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad, the Emir of Qatar, who is hosting the World Cup, to strengthen the ties between the two countries. This significant visit occurs exactly on the day when the President of Israel arrives in the UAE for a one-day visit.
The relations between the UAE and Qatar, after ups and downs and serious tensions in recent years and the settling of the dust from the Gulf Arab countries’ confrontation with Qatar and its embargo, are gradually being restored and maximized. However, one cannot overlook Qatar’s central role in Western, especially American, diplomacy. In any case, the two political axes of the Gulf, Saudi Arabia and the UAE, with their young leaders, are not willing to overlook the American focus on Qatar in Middle Eastern interactions.
One of the most important issues that will gain additional significance in the near future regarding the improvement of Qatar’s relations with its Arab Gulf rivals is Qatar’s relationship with Iran. It remains to be seen whether Qatar, in the light of these improved relations, will establish new ties between Iran and the Arabs or will distance itself somewhat from Iran.
