Doctors’ strike in South Korea
The South Korean government has threatened that if thousands of doctors do not return to work by the end of today, legal action will be taken against their strike.
South Korean officials say that their medical licenses may also be suspended.
About three-fourths of young doctors in the country have left their workplaces in the past week. They disagree with plans to increase annual admissions to medical schools and say that more competition could lead to loss of their income.
Officials argue that this increase in the number of doctors will address shortages due to the rapid aging of the country’s population, but doctors say that fundamental issues such as low pay and working conditions should be addressed first.
