The EU foreign policy chief announced that several European countries are expected to officially recognize the Palestinian government.
The EU foreign policy chief stated that it is expected that several European countries will recognize an independent Palestine by the end of May, meaning within a month.
Josep Borrell made this announcement on Tuesday, April 20, on the sidelines of a special session of the World Economic Forum in Riyadh, the capital of Saudi Arabia.
This comes as the US vetoed a resolution on April 19 requesting full Palestinian membership in the United Nations.
12 UN Security Council member countries supported full Palestinian membership in the UN, including France, China, and Russia, among which Japan and South Korea were seen as two Asian allies of the US.
Following the US veto on full Palestinian membership in the UN, Mahmoud Abbas, the head of the Palestinian self-governing body, threatened to reconsider his relations with the US.
