Expansion of European Union sanctions against the Islamic Republic
According to the Associated Press, on Monday, February 20, the European Union imposed sanctions on two organizations and 32 Iranian individuals, including Mohammad Mehdi Esmaeili, Minister of Culture and Islamic Guidance, and Youssef Nori, Minister of Education, as well as officials of the Islamic Republic’s intelligence agencies and lawmakers of the Islamic Consultative Assembly, in relation to the crackdown on protesters in Iran.
Previously, the French Foreign Minister had announced a package of sanctions that was expected to be approved at the Monday meeting of foreign ministers in Brussels, due to the suppressions that have taken place against the women’s freedom movement in Iran, against the Islamic Republic.
Josep Borrell, the head of European Union foreign policy, has also confirmed this news and announced new sanctions against the Islamic Republic for human rights violations.
