Expressing concerns about the permanent depopulation of earthquake-stricken areas in Turkey

Turkish media and political figures are warning about the possibility of demographic changes in earthquake-affected areas amidst the massive destruction and displacement of local people.

The earthquake has claimed at least 40,000 lives and left over 80,000 injured. Reports in the press suggest that the wave of internal migration will impact the entire country.

Faruk Aksu, a reporter for the main news outlet Habertürk, who interviewed local people in the Hatay province on the Syrian border, expressed concerns in his February 13th article about the possibility of the province being depopulated forever.

He wrote that locals are worried that the depopulation of the area could open the way for migration from other places and consequently change the population structure.

Meanwhile, a Turkish user on the popular platform Sozcu emphasized that an estimated 5.3 million people may have been displaced due to the earthquake in Turkey, and Turkey could witness new waves of migration across its borders.
