The German Foreign Minister says there is no legal basis for designating the Revolutionary Guards as terrorists in the European Union.

On Monday, the German Foreign Minister responded to the requests of opponents of the Islamic Republic to designate the Revolutionary Guards as terrorists, stating that there is no legal basis in the European Union for such designation.

According to Reuters, Annalena Baerbock said that legal experts of the European Union have stated that the Union currently does not have a legal basis for listing the Revolutionary Guards as terrorists.

She made these statements at the end of the monthly meeting of the Foreign Ministers of the European Union in Brussels, in a conversation with reporters.

The statements of the German Foreign Minister echo the views of Josep Borrell, the EU’s High Representative for Foreign Affairs, who said last month that just because you don’t like someone, it doesn’t mean you can call them a terrorist.

Mr. Borrell added that if the European Union were to list the Revolutionary Guards as terrorists without providing legal requirements, a court in one of the Union countries may challenge and overturn this decision.
