The US Attorney’s Offices in 33 states have filed complaints against Meta, particularly Facebook and Instagram platforms, accusing them of negatively impacting the mental health of young people due to the addictive nature of these social networks.

In a complaint filed on Wednesday in the federal court in Oakland, California, attorneys general from 33 states, including California and Illinois, stated that Meta has repeatedly misled people about the fundamental dangers of these platforms and deliberately made children and teenagers heavily dependent on these media.

The complaint states that research has shown that the use of Meta’s social media by young people has resulted in problems such as depression, anxiety, insomnia, academic and daily life disturbances, and many other negative consequences.

Furthermore, the complaint states that Meta has used powerful and unprecedented technologies to attract engagement and ultimately trap young people and teenagers, and the company’s motivation for doing so is also increased profitability.
