International Energy Agency: Iran's Gas Production Growth Has Slowed Down

The International Energy Agency says Iran’s gas production growth has slowed down.

The International Energy Agency states that Iran’s gas production growth was less than 2% in 2024, and this year it is likely to be only 1%.

This is while Iran had an average annual gas production growth of over 5% in the past decade.

Due to the lack of diversity in Iran’s energy portfolio, gas accounts for 70% and oil products almost 30% of Iran’s energy consumption, and the total share of clean energy sources like solar, wind, hydro, and nuclear in Iran’s energy mix does not even reach 1%.

In its latest report published on its website, the International Energy Agency mentions Iran’s gas shortage even in the autumn season and states that the Islamic Republic has been forced to halt the operation of some power plants due to fuel shortages.

The report says that the expected 1% growth in Iran’s gas production also depends on the implementation of plans to reduce gas flaring and increase production from phase 11 of the South Pars gas field.
