International Organization for Migration: 63,000 People Lost Their Lives or Went Missing in Migration Routes Over a Decade

Over the course of ten years, 63,000 people lost their lives or went missing on migration routes, according to the International Organization for Migration.

A report by the International Organization for Migration reveals that between 2014 and 2023, more than 63,000 individuals lost their lives or went missing on migration routes worldwide, with over 28,000 cases solely related to the Mediterranean Sea.

The International Organization for Migration, in its ten-year report, stated that despite the deadly risks, some migrants still venture into the Mediterranean for passage.

Jorge Galindo, a spokesperson for the International Organization for Migration, says these figures are alarming. Even after a decade, we still witness people losing their lives in pursuit of a better life. For instance, 2023 was recorded as the deadliest year with over 8,500 fatalities.

He explained that the reasons behind this phenomenon are numerous, with over 60% of the recorded deaths in this report being due to drowning. More than 28,000 deaths and disappearances have been documented solely in the Mediterranean Sea.

The International Organization for Migration also reports the discovery of a high number of unidentified bodies.
