New Joe Biden plan to grant US citizenship to immigrants
Joe Biden, the President of the United States, in a costly move that could be in the run-up to the presidential election, may provide hundreds of thousands of immigrants with unclear residency status the opportunity to obtain US citizenship.
One of the objectives of this plan could be to create a balance in response to Mr. Biden’s tougher stance on immigrants at the US southern borders two weeks ago, which, in addition to immigrant rights advocates, has caused dissatisfaction among many Democratic lawmakers.
The White House announced on Tuesday, June 29, that the US government in the coming months will allow a specific group of spouses of US citizens whose current residency status is unknown to apply for residency and ultimately US citizenship.
According to senior US officials, this decision could include about half a million people.
The main conditions for eligibility under these regulations are a minimum of 10 years of residency in the US and being married to a US citizen.
