The Ministry of Energy announced that the water storage levels in the country’s dams show a decrease of four percent compared to the previous water year.

The Iran Water Resources Management Company, affiliated with the Ministry of Energy, stated that from the beginning of the current water year until the fifth of Farvardin, the average water storage level in the country’s dams has been 52 percent, indicating a four percent decrease compared to the previous water year. The water year in Iran starts from the beginning of each Mehr month and ends at the end of Shahrivar the following year.

In recent days, some provinces in Iran have experienced heavy rainfall, and the Meteorological Organization has issued a red alert for three provinces.

Last week, coinciding with World Water Day, some government-affiliated media outlets such as Tasnim and ISNA warned that the water situation in Iran has become more critical than ever.

According to experts, the main reasons for this crisis are mismanagement of water resources, prioritizing dam construction, and excessive extraction of groundwater in pursuit of agricultural self-sufficiency. The complete disregard of governmental authorities for warnings about climate change and failure to change irrigation methods have also contributed to this situation.
