Narges Mohammadi released details of sexual harassment of women in detention centers.
Narges Mohammadi, a human rights activist, published a letter from Evin Prison, exclusively obtained by the BBC, revealing new details of the sexual and physical abuse of women detained during the recent months’ protests.
In this letter, Ms. Mohammadi described the assault on protesting women as crimes of the government, stating that not exposing them leads to the continuation of this oppressive method against women.
She wrote that although exposing these assaults might intimidate families, it is necessary to widely and powerfully recount the assaults on active, fighting, and protesting women in Iran on a global level to make the exposure a factor in stopping it.
In her letter, she not only disclosed details of the assault and sexual harassment of several protesting women but also testified that she herself, as a female civil activist striving for the peaceful transition of the people from a religious and despotic, misogynistic government, experienced the bitter taste of assault on a woman on December 24, 2019, in Evin Prison.
