New US Congress Bill Proposes Banning Sale of Sensitive People's Information to Iran

A new bill in the US Congress seeks to prohibit the sale of sensitive information of people to Iran.

The US House of Representatives, one week after passing the headline-making bill to ban TikTok, has approved another bill aimed at protecting American users’ information from foreign countries.

The new bill, named HR 7520 or Protecting American Data from Foreign Enemies Act, prohibits data brokers from selling identifiable personal information of Americans to foreign countries like China, Russia, North Korea, and Iran.

Data brokers will face financial penalties from the US Federal Trade Commission (FTC) for violating the law and selling sensitive information such as location or health data.

The HR 7520 bill was approved by 414 representatives in the US House of Representatives.

With the approval of the US House of Representatives, the bill will now move to the Senate, and if approved by the Senate, it will require the signature of the President to become law.
