Rafael Grossi: Under current conditions, the JCPOA is outdated
Rafael Grossi, the Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency, has stated that the JCPOA does not align with the current realities of Iran’s nuclear program, and given the advancements in nearly all aspects of this program, it is now outdated.
The Director General told Al Arabiya news network that considering the level reached by Iran’s nuclear program, both in terms of existing technologies including the new generation of advanced centrifuges and the amount of nuclear material they have stockpiled, and given the observed advancements in other technological areas related to or part of Iran’s nuclear program, there is a need for greater transparency. Therefore, we are in discussions with Iran to see what additional measures beyond what Iran is committed to can be undertaken.
Mr. Grossi said that Masoud Pezeshkian, the new President of Iran, has responded to his letter, which is an indication of the potential resumption of talks to ensure the peaceful nature of Iran’s nuclear activities.
In response to the question about Mr. Araghchi’s statement that the JCPOA is not revivable, Mr. Grossi said we can bring Iran’s and the U.S.’s positions closer together. There is a possibility of reaching an agreement, but regarding the revival of the JCPOA, it should be noted that the current reality of Iran’s nuclear program’s advancements has, in a way, replaced the JCPOA. Remember that the JCPOA talked about the old generation of Iran’s centrifuges, which are no longer the determining type of equipment that Iran possesses. The new centrifuges produce much faster and in greater quantities.
Therefore, in terms of the advancements in Iran’s nuclear program in nearly all aspects, the JCPOA is now outdated, but it can be updated with very important modifications.
