Blinken calls China’s balloon espionage an irresponsible act
According to reports from American media quoted by Iranian Gate, the US Pentagon has reported tracking and monitoring a Chinese surveillance balloon flying over the American continent. The suspicious balloon was spotted a few days before Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, had planned to travel to Beijing.
A US government official emphasized that this trip has been postponed and stated that currently, there will be no trip to Beijing, but the Secretary of State intends to go to China at the earliest opportunity.
Irresponsible act by China
Anthony Blinken, the US Secretary of State, considered China’s sending of a surveillance balloon over the United States as irresponsible. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs stated this in reference to the conversation between Blinken and Wang Yi, the Chinese Foreign Minister.
Blinken said in a press conference with the South Korean Foreign Minister in Washington that the Chinese spy balloon flying in the sky of the United States violates the sovereignty of America and international laws. Blinken emphasized once again that he has postponed his trip to Beijing and considers the conditions unfavorable for this trip. He also said that communication channels with China are still open.
The US Secretary of State, without providing details on how this incident occurred, said that our priority now is to remove the Chinese spy balloon from the sky of the United States. This incident is one of the most invasive intelligence-gathering maneuvers by Beijing in recent years.
Pentagon spokesperson, Pat Ryder, said that the US has identified a high-altitude spy balloon currently hovering over the continental United States and is monitoring it. We continue to closely track and monitor it. After identifying the balloon, the US government quickly made necessary decisions and took actions to protect itself against sensitive information collection.
On Thursday, Jake Sullivan, the US National Security Advisor, and other senior defense officials informed President Joe Biden about the sighting of a balloon over US soil. American officials said that the President ordered the downing of this high-flying balloon, which was observed and reported by civilians on a commercial airliner. However, the Pentagon opposed this action out of fear of civilian casualties.
Following this news, the Canadian government also reported a similar incident and stated that they are monitoring a high-altitude surveillance balloon. The Ministry of Defense in a statement declared that Canadians are vigilant about security, and the Canadian government is taking necessary measures to ensure the safety of their airspace, including monitoring the possible crash of this balloon or any potential aviation incident.
The Chinese Foreign Minister says that the aerial balloon discovered over the United States, which some claim is a spy balloon, is actually a non-military balloon that has taken flight for non-military purposes such as meteorological and scientific research. It is essentially a weather balloon that has strayed from its path.
