The European Union approves a law to protect journalists

The European Parliament and member countries of the Union reached an agreement on Friday, November 30th, to draft a law that protects journalists and activists from legal harassment by wealthy and influential individuals or companies.

Strategic Lawsuits Against Public Participation (SLAPPs) are part of heavy legal actions that are usually presented with the aim of intimidating critics into courts.

The proposed new laws allow the targeted individual to request a speedy dismissal of the case from the court. The court can also decide that the complainant, whether an individual or organization, should bear the litigation costs, especially personal legal expenses incurred by the defendant.
