The British Secretary of State has no choice but to engage with the Taliban.
Hugo Shorter, the British Secretary of State for Afghanistan, who works from Doha, Qatar, has stated at the end of his mission that there is no alternative but to engage with the Taliban. He believes that internal conflicts have deepened the humanitarian crisis and aided the resurgence of ISIS.
Meanwhile, the issue of the withdrawal of Western forces from Afghanistan, which led to the country’s fall to the Taliban, is still open and under discussion.
Recently, the Defense Committee in the British Parliament has called for a clear, honest, and detailed examination of the military role of the country in Afghanistan and the withdrawal of British forces in 2021, which resulted in the return of the Taliban to power.
Shorter emphasized that Britain’s priority in Afghanistan is to support humanitarian aid for 28 million Afghans in need. Since April 2021, Britain has allocated over $600 million in humanitarian assistance to Afghanistan, which, according to him, has reached millions of Afghans and has prevented a severe winter famine with the help of other contributions. The efforts continue.
