Ursula von der Leyen was re-elected as the President of the European Union Commission on Thursday, July 18, with 401 votes in favor, 284 against, and 15 abstentions for the second term.
In her request speech for re-taking the presidency, she emphasized the need for a strong Europe in times of fear and severe uncertainty. Von der Leyen told MEPs in Strasbourg that she wants to fight with all democratic forces in the European Parliament against populists and extremists who intend to destroy the European way of life.
