Women's Rights Activists in Baghdad Gather Following the Murder of a Famous Blogger by His Father

Following the murder of a prominent blogger by her father, women’s rights activists gathered in Baghdad.

A group of women’s rights activists in Iraq held protests in the city of Baghdad today, demanding legal measures to combat domestic violence.

According to the French news agency, prominent Iraqi blogger Taybeh Al-Ali, who was also active on YouTube, was suffocated to death by her father while she was asleep on January 31st.

The death of this young woman, which occurred in Diwaniyah city in Qadisiyah province, Iraq, sparked a wave of shock and anger in the country, with concerns about the lack of sufficient laws to combat violence against women, especially domestic violence and what is known as honor killings.

The father of this girl later confessed to her murder and was arrested at the police station.

Today, Iraqi security forces prevented women from gathering in front of the Supreme Judicial Council building in Iraq, so the protesting women gathered on a street leading to this building instead.

The protesters held placards that read ‘Stop killing women, we want laws that protect women, especially laws against domestic violence.’
