World Press Freedom Day: Iran Still Ranks Low in Media Freedom Index

On World Press Freedom Day, Iran still ranks at the bottom of the press freedom index.

Reporters Without Borders warned in its 2024 press freedom ranking released on Friday, May 3, 2024, that while half of the world’s population is heading to the polls this year, political pressures on the world’s media are increasing.

According to the new classification by Reporters Without Borders, Eritrea ranks last in terms of media freedom, replacing North Korea, which held this position in the past two years.

Reporters Without Borders describe the press freedom situation as very difficult in 36 countries and complicated in 60 others. Only in 8 countries, journalists have evaluated the situation positively.

Overall, this report has shown that conditions for journalists are unfavorable in three-quarters of the world’s countries.

This report indicates that Iran, ranking 176th, still remains at the bottom of the press freedom index, with only Syria, North Korea, Afghanistan, and Eritrea having worse conditions than Iran.
