According to Iran Gate, Joe Biden, the President of the United States, visited Finland, the newest member of NATO, on Friday, July 22. During this visit, he referred to Finland as a valuable asset to the military coalition. He also stated that Vladimir Putin, the President of Russia, is currently losing in the war in Ukraine.

Speaking in the presence of Sauli Niinistö, the President of Finland, Biden emphasized that Vladimir Putin has lost the war in Ukraine due to Moscow’s lack of resources and economic problems.

In a press conference in Helsinki, Biden stated that Putin has lost the war and there is no chance of victory for him in the war in Ukraine. He added that Ukraine will join NATO and Putin will eventually realize that continuing the war is not in Russia’s favor. Biden emphasized that no one can join NATO while engaged in a war.

The President of the United States has promised to protect Finland, which is also included in NATO, from any attack. He said that the United States is committed to Finland and NATO, and these commitments are very strong. Biden also stated that we are seriously pursuing the issue of exchanging prisoners with Wall Street Journal reporter Ivan Gresko, who has been detained in Russia for over a hundred days. He added that this process is underway.

From Vilnius to Helsinki

Biden traveled directly from the NATO summit in Vilnius, Lithuania to Finland. He also held a small meeting in Helsinki with the leaders of Nordic countries, including Denmark, Norway, Sweden, and Iceland.

The main focus of this meeting was closer cooperation between the Nordic countries and the United States in the areas of security, climate change, and emerging technologies. A White House official said that President Biden should welcome Sweden’s membership in NATO during these meetings, as Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan has put aside his opposition to Sweden joining NATO this week and claimed that he will recommend Turkish lawmakers to announce their approval for Sweden’s accession to NATO.

Five countries in Northern Europe, including three kingdoms (Denmark, Norway, and Sweden) and two republics (Iceland and Finland), are all members of NATO except for Sweden. Biden’s trip takes place almost five years after Donald Trump, the former president of the United States, had a friendly and conciliatory tone in his talks with Vladimir Putin, the president of Russia, during the Helsinki summit.

The President of the United States also spoke about cooperation in the field of emerging technologies and artificial intelligence. He said, ‘We are leading the way in producing the next generation of innovative technologies, which makes our economies stronger. I believe we should have more cooperation in this area because what we are doing is a great advantage for humanity. But if we don’t cooperate, it can create significant problems in the field of artificial intelligence and other areas for us and the world.’

A valuable asset for NATO

Finland officially joined NATO in early April, finally ending decades of military non-commitment and neutrality. In response to Russia’s military invasion of Ukraine, Finland, after seven decades of military non-commitment and decades of neutrality, requested membership in NATO and decided to join the alliance. As a result, the NATO-Russia border has almost doubled in length.

Sa’ouli Neniste said at that time, after raising his country’s flag in front of NATO headquarters in Brussels, that the era of military non-commitment in our history has come to an end and a new era is beginning. Finland shares a border of about 1340 kilometers with Russia. Biden said at the beginning of his meeting with his Finnish counterpart, Sa’ouli Neniste, that he does not think NATO has ever been stronger. He added, ‘We defend together the common democratic values.’

The President of Finland, Neniste, emphasized that his country’s membership in NATO signifies a new era in our security and praised Biden for creating unity at the Vilnius Summit and for his focus on solidarity in support of Ukraine.

Fighting climate change

Biden requested close cooperation in combating the climate crisis during his meeting with leaders of countries including Northern European countries such as Finland, Sweden, Denmark, Norway, and Iceland. He emphasized that this is the only threat humanity faces and that we don’t have much time, but I am hopeful that if we continue to cooperate, we can confront it. Biden added that Northern European countries have long played a leading role in this matter.

The Prime Minister of Iceland, Katrin Jakobsdottir, emphasized that the United States has also played a significant role in addressing the climate crisis and biodiversity in recent years. Similarly, Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen of Denmark praised Biden for the United States’ return to the Paris Climate Agreement and collaboration in combating climate change. Frederiksen stated, ‘We have the opportunity to do this together with you in the White House.’

In conclusion, the President of the United States emphasized that we have a common and similar perspective in many areas, including a free and secure world and providing opportunities for all. We are committed to ensuring that when low-income countries prosper, we will all benefit. We are also strengthening our collaboration in combating climate change and reminding these countries of their commitment to continue supporting Zelensky at the NATO Summit in Lithuania.
