Five asylum seekers, including a child, lost their lives while crossing the English Channel.
Le Monde newspaper reported on Tuesday, April 23, citing a French police source, that at least five asylum seekers, including a child, drowned while crossing the English Channel. They were trying to reach Britain from France overnight. This tragedy occurred as the British Parliament approved a bill to deport asylum seekers to Rwanda to prevent the entry of boats carrying asylum seekers.
Many migrants from the Middle East and Africa choose this dangerous route in the hope of a better future and pay with their lives for this journey. On March 3, a seven-year-old girl drowned in the capsizing of a boat full of asylum seekers about 30 kilometers off the northern coast of France.
In late February, a 22-year-old man from Turkey lost his life on the same route, and two others went missing in the English Channel near Calais. French authorities say that last year, 12 migrants lost their lives while trying to cross the English Channel.
