Iran’s renewed attempt to buy jets from Brazil

According to Folha de São Paulo newspaper, Iran is making another attempt to buy jets from Brazil.

The newspaper reported that Hussein Gharibi, Iran’s ambassador to Brazil, has requested a meeting with Geraldo Alckmin, the Deputy President and Minister of Industry and Commerce of Brazil, to discuss bilateral relations.

According to Folha, Iran had a long-standing and friendly relationship with Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva, the former president of Brazil from 2003 to 2011, and Iranian diplomats believe that now that he is back in power, bilateral relations can be strengthened, despite Joe Biden’s administration maintaining sanctions on Iran.

Reports indicate that Iran attempted to buy jets from Brazil in 2016 and even sent a fighter jet for testing, but the purchase was halted when Donald Trump reinstated sanctions on Iran, and the embargo prevented negotiations with Iran.
