Marjane Satrapi won the Princess of Asturias Award in Spain.

Marjane Satrapi, the creator and writer of the animated film Persepolis, was awarded a special prize by the jury of the Princess of Asturias Foundation in Spain.

Ms. Satrapi, an Iranian-French artist, was honored at an event for being recognized for her fundamental role in defending human rights and freedoms.

In a statement released by this center, Satrapi was introduced as a symbolic figure for her civic engagement as a woman, and for being one of the most influential figures in intergenerational and intercultural dialogue due to her boldness in her artistic work.

This 54-year-old writer and artist, who was born in Iran, published a book about the nationwide protests in 2022 in Iran during the women’s freedom protests, in collaboration with several other artists.
