The housing inflation record has been broken

Housing inflation record shattered

According to Iran Gate, after the US withdrawal from the JCPOA, the Iranian economy suffered greatly. Many supporters of the current government, including Ibrahim Raisi, Rouhani, and the twelfth cabinet, blamed them for the sharp increase in prices. These individuals claimed that the reason for the housing price surge was tied to the JCPOA.

What happened to Raisi’s promise of 4 million homes?

However, now that the Rouhani government handed over the reins to Ibrahim Raisi and his associates 21 months ago, the thirteenth government claims that the economy is not tied to the JCPOA. But according to a recent report on housing inflation, it has broken the record for over 30 months. Now, considering the government’s claim of preventing the economy from being tied to the JCPOA, the question arises: what is the reason for this unprecedented increase in housing?

According to a report published yesterday, monthly housing inflation reached 98% in Dey 1401 (December 2022). This figure indicates an increase of about 6% compared to the previous month, Azar 1401 (November 2022). It has been unprecedented over the past 30 months. In other words, housing inflation has not increased to this extent since Mordad 1399 (July 2020), and the Raisi government has succeeded in setting a new record in destroying people’s livelihood foundations.

You bring the marriage, we bring the home.

During the presidential election campaign in 1400, Ebrahim Raisi chose the issue of housing and the high cost of homes as one of the main themes for his slogans. Everyone remembers when Ebrahim Raisi looked into the cameras during the televised debates and addressed the youth, saying, ‘You get married, we’ll provide the house.’ He then unveiled a plan that became known as the ‘4 million housing plan in 4 years.’

According to what Raisi claimed at that time, the 13th government had promised to build at least one million homes each year. In other words, Ebrahim Raisi explicitly promised to build 4 million homes during the four years of the 13th presidential term. Now, after approximately 21 months since the start of Raisi’s government, there is still no news of the implementation of this plan. In some cases, officials of the 13th government have tried to interpret Raisi’s promise in a different way, while facing the reality.

In this regard, Mohammad Mokhber had stated that the intention of the President was not for the government to build one million housing units every year, but for the people themselves to do this. Mokhber’s statement comes in a situation where a specific promise had been made by the President to build one million residential units annually. Previously, Rostam Qasemi, the former Minister of Roads and Urban Development, who recently passed away, had also announced the lack of cooperation from various institutions in allocating the necessary land for implementing this plan.

The miracle of seed sowing

After the passing of Rostam Qasemi, Ebrahim Raisi introduced an option to take over the Ministry of Roads and Urban Development to the parliament, accompanied by much talk and discussion. Nevertheless, Mehrdad Bazrpash succeeded in obtaining a vote of confidence from the revolutionary parliament and continues to serve as the Minister of Roads and Urban Development in the thirteenth government.

Meanwhile, the track record of Bazrpash, who is considered one of the important elements in the conservative and extremist front, is highly controversial. However, Raisi decided to entrust the implementation of his most important electoral promise to Bazrpash. It has been over 2 months since his appointment as Minister, but there is still no news of progress in the four million housing plan in four years.

There is not even hope for the start of the plan.

Despite all the criticisms that economists and experts had about Rostam Qasemi’s performance in this ministry, he had at least taken some actions to implement this plan, including efforts to compel government institutions to provide land for housing. However, Mehrdad Bazrpash has not even made any progress in this area and has been one of the less influential ministers in the government.

Experts also believe that with the reminder of his talkative track record, Ibrahim Raisi’s government will not even be able to initiate the implementation of the four million housing plan during his presidency. The emergence of a figure like Bazrpash has eliminated any hopes for the controversial implementation of this plan, and now we must ask whether Raisi will be accountable for the failure to achieve his most important economic promise, or once again evade responsibility with evasion and denial of reality.
